The NW Neighborhood

Northwest Portland is made up of conveniently named streets running east to west, from Burnside to Vaughn: Inspiring the name the Alphabet District.

Portland Historic Alphabet District

Portland Historic Alphabet District

A National Historic Designation
In 2000, the area zoned for historic preservation running roughly from NW 24th Ave. to NW 2nd., and from NW Vaughn St. to W Burnside St. (originally settled in 1845) was designated the Historic Alphabet District. Dan Volkmer, as part of the Portland Landmarks Commission, was proud to have worked for that designation with many architecturally savvy Portlanders.

Walk or Take Convenient Transportation
Getting around Northwest is easy and fun: it’s the ultimate “walkable” neighborhood. Transportation is plentiful, too. Not only is the neighborhood bicycle friendly, it also enjoys extensive bus service and a convenient neighborhood street car serving downtown, with connections to several urban universities, the east side of the Willamette River, and even Portland International Airport.

Enjoy Nature, Too

Numerous parks, hiking and jogging trails are also close at hand. While we have small, convenient neighborhood green spaces, such as Couch (pronounced “cooch”) and Wallace Parks, Northwest also boasts the phenomenal Forest Park — at 5,100+ acres, the largest public park of any American city. Adjacent Washington Park, at some 410 acres, includes and/or is adjacent to 15 miles of walking and jogging trails, the zoo, our forestry museum, the Hoyt Arboretum, a children’s museum, our internationally famous Rose Test Gardens, Japanese gardens, tennis and game fields.
